What to put on a freelancer invoice
Most freelancers bill hourly or per project. If a job is big, invoice a deposit up front and the balance on delivery so you are never fully exposed.
Example line items for freelancer work:
- Design work — 14 hrs @ $75
- Revisions round 2 — 1 @ $150
- Project deposit (50%) — 1 @ $600
Every complete invoice also needs your details, the client’s, a unique invoice number, dates, and clear payment terms — see the full invoice checklist, or read how to invoice a client.
Frequently asked questions
Should a freelancer charge a deposit?
For anything over a few hundred dollars, yes. A 25–50% deposit invoice up front protects your time; invoice the remainder when you deliver.
Hourly or fixed price on the invoice?
Either — just be consistent. Hourly reads as "12 hrs @ $75"; fixed reads as a single line. Clear line items get approved faster.
